Grade A vs Grade B Pallets: Which One Does Your Warehouse Need?

4 min read

What makes a pallet Grade A or Grade B?

Pallet grading is based on the structural condition and appearance of used pallets after they have been inspected and sorted. There is no single universal grading standard — grades can vary between suppliers — but in the Vancouver and Lower Mainland market, Grade A and Grade B follow generally consistent definitions.

Grade A pallets are in the best condition among used pallets. They have been inspected for structural integrity and repaired if necessary. Boards are intact, nails are flush, and the pallet is clean and free of major damage. Grade B pallets are functional but show more wear — they may have darker wood, minor board damage that has been repaired, or cosmetic imperfections.

Grade A used pallets

Grade A pallets are the top tier of used pallets. They look close to new and are structurally sound for repeated use. They are typically lighter in colour (newer wood) with minimal repairs. All boards are present and secure, and there are no broken stringers or runners.

Grade A is the right choice for businesses that need pallets for customer-facing shipments, retail supply chains, racking systems that require consistent dimensions, or automated warehouse operations where pallet quality directly affects machinery performance.

Grade B used pallets

Grade B pallets are structurally repaired and functional but have more visible wear. The wood may be darker, and you may see replaced boards or additional nails from repairs. They are heavier on average because replacement lumber tends to be denser.

Grade B is ideal for internal warehouse use, one-way shipments, storage, and operations where cosmetic appearance doesn't matter. They offer significant cost savings over Grade A — often 30-40% less — making them the right choice for high-volume operations where pallets see heavy use and frequent turnover.

Quick comparison

Grade A: Better cosmetic condition, lighter wood, minimal repairs, suitable for racking and retail. Higher price point. Grade B: More visible repairs, darker wood, heavier on average, ideal for storage and one-way shipping. Lower price point. Both grades are structurally sound and suitable for standard warehouse and shipping operations.

Which grade should you choose?

The right grade depends on your operation. If your pallets go into automated racking, customer-facing shipments, or retail distribution, Grade A provides the consistency you need. If you are storing goods in-warehouse, shipping to internal facilities, or using pallets for one-way transport, Grade B saves money without any functional downside.

Many of our customers in Burnaby, Surrey, Richmond, and across the Lower Mainland use a mix — Grade A for outbound customer shipments and Grade B for internal handling. Contact Magic Pallets for pricing on both grades and we can help you find the right balance for your operation.
